In the year of 1983, Chris Wiggs created Polly Pocket for his daughter Kate with an idea of developing a toy tiny enough to fit into a pocket. The idea of using a powder compact he came up with the idea of tiny houses for the teeny dolls. Wiggs launched the product through Bluebird toys of Swindon, England and Polly Pocket first appeared in stores in 1989.

In the early 1990s Mattel had distribution arrangements with Bluebird to sell Polly Pocket and in 1998, Mattel bought Bluebird toy corporation. Mattel decided to change the look of Polly Pocket in 1999 and added a variety of series of collectible items. The new found Polly Pocket design became more realistic and slightly larger than the original creation.

Soon after the new Polly Dolls, Mattel came out with Fashion Polly Pocket, which consisted of the same characteristics from the new designed Polly Pocket. The new Fashion Polly Pocket came with bendable joints and Polly stretch, clothing was made out of rubber like material. Also developed was a magnetic Polly, which made Polly and friends able to attach to most surfaces in a magnetic Polly world, that included magnetic hands and feet.
